Houston Person has often been typecast in the role of funky tenor saxophonist, most at home with organ combos and backbeats. He's extraordinarily good at it, certainly, but he's equally at home playing mainstream modern jazz. Several sides of Houston's musical personality show up in this wide-ranging selection of his recordings for the Muse label. He's exuberantly soulful on "Walking the Dog," and digs deep for the slow blues of "Late Night Lullaby," while "My Romance" is superior tenor balladry. He's just as convincing, though, when working through the harmonic complexity of John Coltrane's "Equinox" or playing Sonny Rollins's "Blue Seven" in duet with bassist Ron Carter. --Stuart Broomer
