CD Reviews

One of the greatest bands that almost happened, ever
P. Sumida | 04/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Hot Glue Gun was a band of University of Illinois students who rocked the campus from '86 to '92, but they were particularly hot from '89 to '91. They were everywhere, a trio who captured the C-U-style of thoughtful punk (loud, noisy, a little self-conscious) and combined it with the neo-funk inspired by early RHCP and the subsequent revival of P-Funk that their success inspired among the college set. I saw them several times, as had everyone who liked music on the U of I campus during that time period. These songs were as good as I remembered, unlike many of the "hot" college bands whose CDs I seek in my myopic middle age. I'm partial to the EP songs that included "I'll Kill You," "Houseboat," "Torpedo," and "She Calms Down." At least there's a CD and MP3 set of these songs: my other two favorite U of I bands; Breaking Up with Ginger and Matt, Vic, and Dave (Matt was the Hot Glue Gun drummer); have no such audio postcards to remind me that I'm more likely to see the Hannah Montana Movie than I am to make the Great American Record. I'm not complaining, I'm just sayin'."
