CD Reviews

The best HCSF album so far!
Justin | Marseille | 03/28/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Hot Club of San Francisco has really outdone themselves this time. With a swingin' Reinhardt/Grappelli repertoire and a style that evokes smoky Parisian nightclubs of the 1930s, Clair de Lune is the best effort by the HCSF yet. The fact that it was recorded live is amazing in itself. I prefer studio recordings, but the sound on Clair de Lune is terrific. All the instruments really cut through.Song selection is crucial to making a good album. With Clair de Lune, the Hot Club of San Francisco plays an outstanding set of music, much like we would expect from a live performance. Highlights include "Dark Eyes", "All of me", and "Tchavalo Swing". This album is not to be missed."

""Claire de Lune", a live album recorded in August, 2000 by the Hot Club

of San Francisco, is a wonderful blend of melancholy ballads and

swinging jazz in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephane

Grappelli. Paul Mehling, group leader, lead guitarist and composer,

and violinist Evan Price of Turtle Island fame are particularly exceptional.

Everyone will have their favorites as the set is strong from start to finish.

Mine include "James," "Nadja," "Swing 53," "Place de Brouckrere,"

"Tchavolo Swing" and the title track. An instant classic."
Excellent gypsy jazz" de nouveau"

"This cd sparkles in musicianship ,choice of material and pizzazz! The performance crescendo is Tchavolo Swing and For Renata is a very reflective melodic guitar encore type showcase!
