"I refute the contentions of the individual who compared the great Heino with John Denver. Denver? Neiiiiinnnnn.... Heino, to me, is equal parts Dave Loggins, Charles Ives, Phillip Glass , Udo Dirkscheider, and Frank Zappa. No contemporary artist's grasps of tonality and dissonance compare with that of Heino's. Just one listen to Heino's "Ich bin eine meine Heinzen Ketchup-platzen" and his skilled mastery of harmonies will convince even the most novice Heino listener that the Amazing Albino is the finest European musician to grace our shores since Klaus Meine and the Scorpions unleashed their sting upon millions of giddy adolescents."

The guiltiest of guilty pleasures...

"OK, its taken me years of intensive counselling to finally come out of the closet, but I think I'm ready to admit it--I'm a big Heino fan! There, I said it...



I bought some of his tapes back in high school when I was learning German, thinking that singing along would help me with my accent....I mean after all, authentic German volk music ja ja? Ha! Little did I know that this is about as authentic German folk as Taco Bell is authentic Mexican. I don't care. Even with full knowledge that Heino is as kitchy as a gift shop in a midwest truck stop, I'm hooked. Heino rocks!!



Then I was an exchange student to Germany--imagine my surprise when I got there that nobody would admit to liking Heino! Come on guys, survey's regularly show that Heino is the best known German amonst german-speakers. The guy's sold over 50 million records--I know you've got those LPs hidden in the closet!



Anyways, this being 1983, Heino wasn't playing on German radio much then--the pop waves were dominated by "99 luftbalones", "Die wuste lebt", and the ever-popular "da da da (ich liebst dich nicht du liebst mich nicht)". What is this neue welle crap? Give me "Die schwartze Barbara" or "Schwartzbraun ist der hazelnuss" any day!



Oh well, imagine a stereotypical, cluless exchange student wondering why all American's didn't like Laurence Welk, and you can imagine how this Heino-lover came across to those postmodern Germans.



If anybody can pull off singing in the mist of a bunch of men dancing in lederhosen its Heino. And for all of you high-falutin' uppity types, I've got news for you! Heino isn't any more kitchy than Wagner is!"

Total Kitsch. But in a good way.

"Heino, from what I've learned, is a legend in Germany. To me, he's the equivalent of a John Denver. Heino loves folksongs and sings them robustly. If you don't understand deutsch, it's still an enjoyable listen, for all those familiar folksongs have been Heino-ized for your listening pleasure."
