Synopsis

Amazon.com
The star-studded Rompe Diskotekas collection serves several purposes. It's the first release from Roc La Familia, the world-music branch of hip-hop mogul Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records and is as a major springboard for its central character and host, Hector Bambino "El Father," who pops up on four tracks. The disc also aims to bridge the seemingly similar worlds of hip-hop and reggaeton via a few creative collaborations. Skip past the overlong, overblown intro--a phone message and blessing from Hector Bambino's mother that also finds him calling out haters, corrupt government, former friends, and the press. (Aren't these guys ever in a good mood?) Zion & De La Ghetto create some street sparks with Memphis Bleek during "Sigue Ahi," and the Polaco/Freeway duet Sonando rides a slick, head-bobbing groove. Not everything works, and several tracks ("La Cama," "Dejale Llevar," "Tiburon") buckle under reggaeton's inherently repetitive rhythms and phrasings. Even Hector Bambino's money moment with head honcho Jay-Z, "Here We Go Yo," isn't particularly memorable. Still, it's an interesting sonic experiment that will likely refine--and hopefully diversify--with time. --Joey Guerra

CD Reviews

Hova is ova!!
Stevens Tabares | Miami, FL | 10/31/2006
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Steve from Miami..As a huge supporter of the reggaeton movement or latin artists in general i have to poke my nose in the scene and take a "wak" of whats the hottest and latest. So what did i sniff here? ever been to a horse stable before? for those of you who haven't it smells like sh** yes i said it rompe diskotekas is more like rompe billetera (wallet breaker)it's a horrible mixture of supposed rap n reggaeton and i'm outraged i paid for it.It was my second roc la familia purchase (the second 1 was the nore la familia kinda dissapointing also read my reviw before buying) needless to say they both sucked so does roc la familia. So why 3 stars well, although most of the beats are repetitive and ja-rule sounds horrible over reggaeton beats, this album does have one outstanding single yes "EL telefono" which is about one of my favorite past times when i was a younger boy. This single is HOT and with Wisin and Yandel blessing the track, and some amazing beats you can't go wrong.I still wouln't pay for that single alone though so you could just d/l that one, aside from that this concludes me from buying anymore roc la familia albums their producing is horrible. For a better option go with wisin and yandels new album(see my review on that 1)and if you don't like wisin and yandel or hector el father then go buy an alan jackson album...holla!!!"
Too much hype
