Haydn: A different style of mass.
G. Laird | San Jose, CA | 04/21/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have the entire series, 8 CDs. I am excited and pleased with all. I have an extensive classical music collection and recognize quality. One reviewer complained that the musicians and singers were not N.Y. Lincoln Center caliber. Perhaps, but live with it. I could not detect any failings or flaws with the performances. The tempo and meter is crisp and consistent throughout the performances. The orchestra is distinct. Instruments appear professionally played, as none stand out during the performance by being out of sync. The voices are clear, on beat, and on key. The reproduction of sound is crisp and vibrant.

Haydn was a devout Christian. His masses are lively, spirited, reverent, and quintessential Baroque (That means heavily ornamented, layered with melodies and harmonies.). I imagine he turned a few heads of traditional and stodgy clergy, when these compositions were first performed. I have a limited number of other masses to compare Haydn to. Bach, Beethoven, and Vivaldi all seem to err on the side of conservative and somber, versus Haydn.

Obviously, if you are looking to add to your collection of liturgical music or start, this collection is an excellent choice."
