A Tenor Man As Great As John Coltrane!
Wayne Dawson | New Zealand | 09/09/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)
"Another fine production effort by Orrin Keepnews who gave Harold Land his choice of trumpeter for the occasion, the fabulous Kenny Dorham. Land really knew how to make the influence of Charlie Parker come alive through his tenor, an influence doubly enriched through his own individual eloquence. Both were bluesman of the highest calibre and on O.K. Blues, the longest track on the disk at around twelve minutes and dedicated to the producer, Land lays down one of his finest solos; full of impulsive, atriculate energy that finds just the right gaps to impassion a sustained single note plea. If Coltrane was all 'sheets of sound' Harold Land was a restless bubbling brook that not infrequently cascades over the edge! Backed by a good rhythm section of piano, bass, drums, this masterpiece deserves the undivided attention of the Keepnews Collection with new liner notes and photos!"
