CD Reviews

Wonderful!!!!!
Abhijit Mazumder | Goa, India | 02/24/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"In side one Panditji proved that Lalit is a raag of dawn. If it is listen with closed eyes, it can be imagined that the first light of sun is coming out in the East. In second side raag Bhoopali comes out slowly with the full glimpse of devotion and meditation."
An extremely well-done performance

"First of all, a few details are not indicated for this album on Amazon. Here you go:

Title: Maestro's Choice - Volume I

Contents:

1) Raga Lalit - Alap, Gat in Rupak & Ek Taal (30 minutes)

2) Raga Bhoopali - Alap, Gat in Jhap & Teen Taal (30 minutes)

This an extremely well-done album from all aspects. Lalit is an early morning melody and a favourite of Hariprasad Chaurasia. It is sublime and devotional and evokes the experience of early rays of the sun and this is what the artist says about this raga: "If a blind man tells me that he has never seen the early rays of sun, I would play this raga to him!"

The second part is raga Bhoopali which is an extremely popular ancient melody from Indian classical music. It has in immediate effect on the listener and it is especially suited for the flute. It evokes a peaceful and harmonious mood.

The tabla is played by Anindo Chatterjee, a great percussionist. His beats are crisp and pleasing to the ears.

Digital recording "DDD". Highly recommended for everybody - especially for those who are "curious" about Hariprasad Chaurasia and want to make a beginning."
