A Great Introduction...

"The pairing of Joe Wilder and Joe Newman for a feature recording was long overdue when they got together in the late '80's to create this terrific recording. Friends for years and co-alumni of the Basie organization, their styles were complementary and yet distinctive, making this a recording that wears well even for those who are not trumpet aficianados.Newman, of course, was famous for his years of solo work in the great "Atomic" Basie Band of the late '50's and early '60's, and his best-known composition, "Midgets," is represented here. The surprise for many listeners will be Joe Wilder, who has been a legend among musicians in the New York studios for FIVE decades! He is a unique and glorious player with a deep, warm sound, and his thoughtful and measured (but never heavy) approach is the perfect foil for Newman's more aggressive and energetic style. While not all of the cuts hit on all cylinders - some of the approaches (latin, New Orleans shuffle) can strike as contrived - the playing itself is marvelous, and the straight-ahead swing and ballad numbers are simply wonderful. Strongly recommended."
