SIMPLY THE BEST
John J. Schauer | Chicago, IL USA | 10/14/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For those who aren't already familiar, Handel's Opus 6 Concerti Grossi rightly stand alongside Bach's Brandenburg Concertos as the twin peaks of Baroque orchestra concertos. The Opus 3, being Handel's only other set of concerti grossi, are certainly worthy of a hearing, but the Opus 6 set towers above them. When this recording first appeared in the late 1960s, it was the last word in stylish performance. Since then the "original instrument" revolution has produced numerous more "authentic" recordings, many of which are very good but none of which, in my opinion, equal the joyous performances Marriner coaxed from his celebrated ensemble of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Their sense of exuberance is infectious; despite the fact that I own--and enjoy--many other recordings, this is the one I always come back to. Thurston Dart's dazzlingly inventive harpsichord continuo playing contributes in no small way to the amazing result. A set to treasure!"
