"The Hal McIntyre band alone tried to move the Ellington approach to jazz writing beyond plagiarism - unlike, say, Charlie Barnet who tended to just copy Ellingtonian styling. Gunther Schuller in his "History of Jazz Swing Era Vol.II" picks out two 'lesser' bands for mention, McIntyre's and Bob Chester's, albeit for very different reasons. This CD demonstrates McIntyre's search for perfection in the section work rather than featuring soloists, and shows how on the pop tunes of the day, he could impose great writing and good performances to lift them into the jazz realm. A highly recommended issue for any serious big band collector."
