An Ancient Musical Tradition Still Lives On

(4 out of 5 stars)
"Hakki Obadia is one of the few representatives of the noble and ancient Iraqi-Jewish musical tradition. Having emigrated to the US in his youth, he became the New York Sefardic community's most sought-after Middle Eastern Jewish singer / instrumentalist of the previous generation. This CD ranges from religious and spiritual melodies and chants to love songs, and features several instruments and local styles. The recording qualities are not quite up to contemporary standards, which is why I rated it with four stars. However, the music is excellent and should be of interest to anyone who appreciates great ethnic and folk music, especially with a spiritual bent."
