Synopsis

Album Description
Guido Santórsola (1904-1994) is one of the few recent composers who, though he wrote much symphonic and chamber music, was recognized most for his guitar music. A resident of Brazil since the age of five, he received a strict European academic musical training unlike his more famous countryman, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Santórsola wrote tonal music until 1959, then began to combine the twelve-tone system with his own innovations. As with so many other Latin American composers, two streams appear in Santórsola's output: pure music, and music influenced by popular folk tradition. This recording includes two of the composer's dodecaphonic works; the others are tonal.
