Guerilla Black - God Bless the Child

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Compton rapper Guerilla Black (A.K.A. Charles Williamson) returns with his sophomore album "God Bless The Child" (2007) a short twelve track release which features guest appearances from Janet's Vice, Chris Jones, Hot Dollar & Lawrence "Master Poe" Lejohn. Back in 2004 Guerilla Black dropped his debut album "Guerilla City" and got a notable amount of attention & comparisons to the Notorious. Looks like no one is paying attention this time around though, and that's unfortunate as Guerilla Black delivers some decent music on this release. G-Black opens the album up on the "Genesis" intro thanking god, and quoting his grandfather, telling his audience that the music on this release is straight from the heart. The first full length track is the strong "Thank You (God Bless The Child)" Feat. Janet's Vice (hook), Guerilla Black remembers losing his wife, and appreciates his son, rhyming about being a father. Next up Guerilla does a track about the "The Streets" which features an appearance from singer Chris Jones, soulful hook, smooth production. "Whatever" features some harder production and a guest appearance from Mississippi rapper Hot Dolla. Guerilla Black talks to and about the ladies on track's like "She Wanna Baller" & "Put Ya Hands Up" without much success. Backed by a catchy sample Guerilla Black keeps thing going with "I Know" aspiring to be a millionaire. Lawrence "Master Poe" Lejohn drops in for an okay track with "The Life". Guerilla Back appreciates women and getting his drink on "Pour Me A Drink". My favourite track on this release is the nostalgic "Round & Round", Guerilla Black takes his audience back to the days of his childhood, and delivers a creative track that vibes real well. On the closing track "Revelations", Guerilla Black talks about himself giving shout outs and thanks. "God Bless The Child" benefits from Guerilla Black delivering some introspective positive lyrics & and the album having on point production throughout. Some track's are run of the mill & fall into filler material, but felt like Guerilla Black delivers some genuine gems on tracks like "Thank You" (God Bless The Child) and "Round & Round "."
Can't stop playing it!

"Got my copy in the mail and I can't stop playing it in my Jeep. Just as good as his first CD if not better. His flow has really changed and I like his new style. Too bad it's only 11 tracks of new music (not counting the intro) so it's over rather quickly but in this case it's quality over quantity that's why I'm giving this CD a five."
