CD Reviews

Shades of Itchykoo Park, man!
John W. Dunner | Atco, NJ United States | 04/15/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Shades of Itchykoo Park, man! Despite phased drum rolls, open-fifth male-female harmonies, sitar leads, and every mystic astrologic crystal lyric cliché from your Ken Kesey catalog, the Grip Weeds mow over their pre-Woodstock love-and-peace vibe with a treble-heavy, early 70s guitar attack that gives just the right amount of sour-patch saltiness to this flower-powered electric sandbox. The true giant on this beach is "Closer to Love," the only track featuring the lead vocals of bassist Kristin Pinell. Pinell's singing washes away the vocal mannerisms of her bandmates, recalling Peanut Butter Conspiracy's late Sandi Robinson at her psychedeliciousest."
A Return to Form
boomerhead | East Coast, USA | 03/06/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album brings the group back to the focus and drive of "The Sound Is In You." The previous album, "Summer of a Thousand Years" seemed a little too undistinguished to my ears. But "Giant on the Beach" brings back everything that is simply GREAT about classic 60's psych/pop rock. Every cut on this CD is a gem and they flow very well together. In an era saturated with "Retro" sounds, I don't know of another group that blends these great American styles so well and gives it their own spin."
