Gregory Isaacs Inna Dance Curfew
darmak2 | Westlake, Ohio | 02/22/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The CD cover announces: "Dread Flimstone presents Gregory Isaacs". Dread Flimstone is pretty obscure. But the CD cover also says "Dubified funk for ya and the reggaesoulgroove famly, acid jazz roots". This is probably the best description of the music on this CD as it includes jazz, dub, roots reggae, funk, sampling, and even some soul. Some might say bombastic would apply. Self-titled `jungle' versions are included. While it is a real hodge-podge, and impossible to pigeon hole, the main category this CD fits in is dub style reggae. Isaacs released `Private Lesson' in 1996, plain roots reggae, and then collaborated for the first time with Dread Flimstone on the CD `Gregory in Dub,' an all dub version of `Private Lesson'. `Dance Curfew' is Isaacs' second collaboration with Flimstone, and represents the third version of `Private Lesson'. Gregory got a lot of mileage out of `Private Lesson', and got it real right on `Dance Curfew'.The `Dance Curfew' CD has some classic cuts. `Once I Was Lonely', a version of the song released under the same name a few years earlier, is outstanding. `Freedom Song', a version of `Preacher Boy' is classic; `Sad Mood' and `Dance Curfew' (the title cut) are great. Even if you're not a Gregory Isaacs or dub fan, if you're into reggae at all, chances are you'll like these four songs on this CD - they're pretty accessible. Isaacs' fans and dub fans will enjoy the rest of the CD too.Best cuts:
