Classic Sound with a Newer Edge
A. Tatusko | Duncansville, PA | 10/26/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Green Marie comes out of New Jersey with an interesting and eclectic sound that will give you a marriage of a little bit of the blues, R&B, and power pop. If you think of the New Pornographers stripped down a bit in a small club and a little soul help, you can get the idea. The songs are all catchy and easy to follow with enough complexity to maintain interest over repeated listens.

The first track, Some People has a light and uptempo funk to it, with a brief reference of Steely Dan and even a little Santana vibe. There is a lot of top motion that keeps the piece moving even through the bridge.

The Cd moves to more of an edgier and dirtier sound with Matter of Principle. With a crukny rhythm and the trashy cymbal work this tune changes the pace.

"Don't Be Loved" is the most orchestrated piece with a softer and more ambient feel to hearkening to the risk that one takes in the vulnerabilty of love. The chord structure and guitar maintain an airy feel throughout the song even though the 3/4 metered groove drives the tune through equally responant bass line.

"Yer Criminal" swtiches back to a more groove oriented presence bringing us back into the flow of the R&B feeling that a lot of the recording emulates. The chorus on this one seems to stick in your head with a really catchy bridge.

"Ain't Getting Stoned" feels like a tune designed for a top down drive down the shore. This definitely has that beach, kind of bluesy feel...

"Rise" shifts back to a dirtier funkiness accentuated by a slapping and popping bass groove and a syncopated rhythm throughout.

The CD closes with a more Beatlesesque closer with a long fade into the sunset."
