"I came across this rare performance of the Miles Davis Quintet about 9 years ago. Since then, it has been one of my favorite recordings in my Miles and my Coltrane collection. The whole band plays with an urgency that matches their legendary status. It makes me wish some of their studio albums exhibited as much fire. The rhythm section is really tight and gives both Coltrane and Miles excellent support throughout the concert. Miles is very prolific but Coltrane dominates the show. This recording was made during Coltrane's "Sheets of Sound" period. But, by no means does this mean it is overkill. Rather, it is very riveting. Coltrane's solo on So What is the best I've heard from this period. The version of Round Midnight is also one of the highlights. And, Green Dolphin Street is also well done. The sound qualtiy is pretty good for a live recording in 1960. It's much better than some other live recordings from the same period. However, this does not distract from the overall experience, which is listening to this special and captivating performance."
