"This CD features some incredibly rare, and some just plain incredible, recordings by some of the greatest cellists of the last century. The repertoire and moods are wonderfully varied, as are the playing styles on offer-- from the "catch-me-if-you-can" humor of the Popper Spinning Song to the spiritual intensity of a Bach aria with cello obbligato, from full-blooded concerto excerpts to a flashy flamenco serenade. The personalities of the performers shine through in these miniature musical portraits, lovingly expertly selected by the highly respected English cellist Keith Harvey. This CD has quickly become one of my all-time favorite cello discs. It's not just a tribute to the cello, but a celebration of the most noble human values reflected in the music-making of transcendent artists."
