CD Reviews

A significant drop in quality, sad to say

"the Amazon reviewer who said this album is like "a greatest-hits w/ all new songs" is either a johnny-come-lately fan of the band or a pathetic sycophant. let's have the grapes to call a spade a spade. this album is underwhelming, half-hearted and feels completely mailed in by Lytle. In his Magnet cover story, he basically confesses as much; he is sick of performing under the Grandaddy moniker. Almost 1/2 of this album is filler, and only about half of the remaining songs can respectably match his back catalog. "Jeez Louise," "Guide Down Tonight," "Rear view mirror," "Summers' Gone," and "Disconnecty" are very good, but 5 good songs do not a great Grandaddy album make. Look, I love this band; I was lucky enough to see them Halloween night when they opened for Elliott Smith on what ended up being his last tour. And, I'm not just a "Sophtware Slump" fan--I like Sumday and "Under the Western..." almost as much. Brass tax is, Lytle's heart wasn't really in this album, and it shows."
