"Well, with Iran's Googoosh (Faegheh Atashin) recent resurgence to the public arena, her pre-revolutionary songs seem to resonate even more. This CD is perhaps the best representation of the refined pop-music that emerged from Iran in the late 60's and early 70's. From the politically charged "Do' Panjereh"/("Two Windows") to the wonderfully melodic and amorous ("Man o Gonjeeshk Hay-e Khoon-e"/("Me and the Sparrows of the House"), Googoosh and the musical pioneers that she worked with (Shamaeezade, Varoojan, Ghanbari, Jennatti-Attayi, Sarfarraz...) prove the sophistication of the pop music of Iran's pre-revolutionary era. And Googoosh, once again, shows us that her interpretive skills can be matched by no one else. Who else can command the orchestrations of these songs with such ease, and make them sound so lovely and melodic (esp. in a culture where music was, for long, considered forbidden and women who "unveiled" their voice were considered "inappropriate")? The orchestration of these pop gems, the harmonic progressions, the instrumentation, the arrangement; "Do' Panjereh"/("Two Windows") is a must for any music lover, Iranian or otherwise."
