CD Reviews

No redeeming social value
Ed C. Fields Jr. | Lexington, Ky | 02/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have not heard music that is so utterly lacking in redeeming social value since I first heard Commander Cody Live At Armadillo World Headquarters. Ten stars! No, no, fifteens stars! Aaron Diskin sings in at least six different languages, most of which sound like he's clearing his throat and getting ready to spit, and he manages to sound gloriously oily in all of them. He also looks like he could throw down shots with Keith Richards and Waylon Jennings. The accordion and violin flat out wail and the drummer (who has an Irish name and more about that in a minute) slams the drums so hard that I probably got a concussion from standing too close to the speakers. Now for some of the tracks. Train Across Ukraine is a travelogue through the frozen Steppes in which you are accosted by a grinning madman who does not have your best interests at heart. You know that if you don't get killed or arrested, you will have one hell of a story for your friends in Omaha. Tucheses And Nenes is, I assume, Yiddish for--hey, you figure it out! Come To Me is an over-the-top lustfest and a tranlation of the terms of endearments is not necessary-their voices say it all. Put it on and play it loud! Slip it in between Los Super 7 (Aayyy!) and The Pogues and listen to with an Anthropologist's ear. Throw some bottles and yell if you want to. Anyhow, I suspect, if this CD is any indication, that the Balkanese, the Mexicans, and the Irish are cousins. Viva La Raza! Viva Golem!"
Makes me wanna dance!
J. Berger | New York F*ckin City | 03/06/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I loved the last album and I love this one more! I can't help but want to dance around my apartment like a total idiot (not that I ever dance like anything other than an idiot) whenever I listen to this album. Plus, I can't get the songs out of my head. Definitely a good buy and I can't wait to see them live again!"
Shaking my Tuches with Golem!
A. Pogany | Brooklyn | 02/10/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Recording for the first time primarily in English, this record is a HUGE step forward for Golem. Tucheses and Nenes, Come to Me, Mirror Mirror are my favorites. energetic and frenetic at times, beautiful and melodic at others, i can't wait to see them live again. if Gypsy Punk like Gogol Bordello is your thing, you should definitely check Citizen Boris out."
