With new drummer Shannon Larkin (formerly of Amen), Godsmack stick with the riff-heavy, layered tunes and sharp, confident bridge-burning lyrics (witness the convincing vitriol of "I F@?king Hate You"). Highlights include Sully Erna?s gut-spewing scream on "Changes," the memorable chorus and commanding assured "I Stand Alone," and the radio-ready "Straight out of Line." If yoiu listen to the edited version of "I F****** Hate You", it just sucks. I own the one with the cuss words, and i'm happy I own that version. Bottom line: DON'T EVER BUY THIS ABUM EDITED!!!!" It's very rare to find a band so loved or villified with no middle ground. And while this album may only be preaching to the converted, it's one hell of a statement. The band moves away some from it's cookie cutter tendencies and ventures at times into almost Pantera-esque territory. It adds a definite punch to their already potent mix of Sully's growls against grinding guitar and pounding rhythms. As a hedge, the band included the hit "I Stand Alone," from The Scorpion King, but the rest of the songs have enough strength of their own. "Changes" one of the standout tracks, incorporates heavy grooves with even an acoustic passage thown in. Elsewhere, their white knuckle approach is very apparent on the spewing "I F***ing Hate You" and Sully's life chronical "Releasing The Demons." "Serenity" the album's acoustic closer recalls Jar Of Flies era AIC with its tribal drums and almost psychedelic feel. Now that Pantera's dead and Metallica's sold out, these guys are on top of the game and this album shows it." .... Review of Faceless Rob | NYC | 04/21/2003 (4 out of 5 stars) "Godsmack latest release "Faceless" debuted at number 1 this week and for good reason. Godsmack usually know for its heavy but rhythm friendly sound has maintained a reputation from its last 2 CD's and does not disappoint with "Faceless". The album shows growth and change in the sound, but nothing too drastic. A sacrifice of some rhythm for a heavier edge is a minor change that is noticeable but not unwelcome. The album's second track "Faceless" is definitely one of the albums high points with the adrenaline taken up a notch, and even a guitar solo...we like it. The fifth track is somewhat familiar being that it was released several months ago, yes "I stand Alone" is also on the CD and is pretty typical of the album, it seems to fit right in. Faceless even has a ballad of sorts, "Serenity", with its relaxed pace and somewhat positive lyrics it is a nice way to wind down the album."
