CD Reviews

Svetlanov does the best Glinka
V. Krzyzaniak | FEDERAL WAY, WA USA | 03/24/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is great. It has common Glinka pieces like the 2 Spanish Overtures and Valse Fantaisie, and hard to find works like his incomplete symphony, orchestral music from Prince Kholmsky and the Premier Polka.

If you have any of these pieces already, then this CD is still worth the $10 because Svetlanov does the best Glinka. These recordings will blow away your older Glinka recordings. The clarity in the Spanish Overtures brings out the timpani instruments better than any other recording that I have.

If you are a fan of Borodin's Steppes of Central Asia, then listen carefully to the Glinka Incomplete Symphony on this CD, which uses the same theme. Guess it was a old Russian theme. The final piece on the CD, the Premiere Polka, is quite jolly, but leaves you wishing for more music. Why didn't you write more music Mr. Glinka?"
