Smooth guitar-oriented jazz brimming with musicianship
12/24/1998
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I had not heard anything by guitarist, Gil Parris, but as a guitar player myself, I took a chance I'd like the CD, and I'm glad I did.It is an excellent recording of first-rate musicians, including a couple of vocalists (although the album is mainly instrumental). Parris, who claims one of his major influences is George Benson, has excellent guitar chops, but is more reminiscent of Larry Carlton than Benson in his playing style -- very fluid but more electric. If you like artists such as Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, the Rippingtons, etc., you will definitely like this CD.I would have given the record five stars if Parris had written all the music himself and it offered something really unique beyond the other smooth jazz I have listened to. Nonetheless, it is still a nice addition to a smooth jazz collection.Buy it!"
An excellent guitarist performing weak material

"Gil Parris can play, but this music is bland. Try Blue Thumb instead."
A showcase for a monster talent

"Gil Parris presents a delightful assortment of music that truly
displays an awesome talent. His accompanyment here are musicians
of equal talent... the fact that they too, are established names
in jazz only serves to underscore how strong Gil's chops really
are.
His choice of tone and phrasing will delight a sensitive ear. I
particularly like the way he builds to a very satisfying finish,
even in a standard like "Rainy night in Georgia"!"
