CD Reviews

What music in the 21st century should sound like.
Justin Harris | Kansai, Japan | 02/14/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I first came across these chaps in about 1995 when they released a rather sterling single, the name of which escapes me (possibly `Sedatives`). That was straight ahead indie guitar noisy pop. This album however, while having traces of that original sound, mixes in disco, hip-hop and tricky electronica. That `mixing all the genres` idea sounds like a bad idea most of the time, but it works here. This is simply one of the best records released in the last 2 years. They do dance better than actually `real` electronic acts (see Dust me selecta/G-House Project) and the chiming/beat driven guitar remains on songs like `The deer in you` and `Fight revolution team`. The album starts with the blippy-beepy `Phazer Kidz in the windy city` (which could be Future Sound of London in places if you didn`t know better) and ends in a similar style with the absolutely beautiful `We design the future.` And that they do. This is what pop music was supposed to sound like in the 21st century. Good songs, carefully constructed, without a care for what kinds of instruments are used, just what sounds good. This album is very highly recommended."
