CD Reviews

Laid Back Class

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This lovely complilation of Georgie Fame's Pye years is well worth getting. The musicianship and recording is all excellent and the title track is worth the price on its own.

The reason I've given it 4 stars rather than 5 is that this isn't Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames. I think these tracks were recorded in the 70's and quite a few of the them bury his great voice with uneccessary multi-tracking and layers of strings and horns. That said sometimes this works really well, such as on the fun "I'm in love with you baby". Certainly the Jazz influence on Georgie is completely unrepresented on these recordings.

However overall this is a fine, largely laid-back collection, which captures Georgie Fame at a mid-point in his career and it represents that really well.
