Synopsis

Album Description
"An uninhibited virtuoso, with soul and fabulous technique." -- The Strad, reviewing violinist Remus AzoiteiGeorge Enescu (1881-1955) was not only Romania's most famous composer, he was one of the great violinists of the twentieth century, his fame overshadowed only by his own genius in composition. No other composer since Beethoven left behind a comparably significant oeuvre in this genre, especially considering that the golden age of the violin sonata was long past. Romanian-born violinist Remus Azoitei made his concerto debut at the age of eight and went on to study with Itzhak Perlman at the Juilliard School. After winning numerous prizes he was appointed the youngest ever violin professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

CD Reviews

Supremely convincing and accurate performances
Robert Manari | San Francisco, CA United States | 02/25/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Yehudi Menuhin, Enescu's beloved student and friend, always believed that the 21st Century is the time when Enescu's genius will be finally fully recognized. The present CD is yet another important step in fulfilling Menuhin's intuition.

When it comes to Enescu's Second Violin Sonata we are fortunate to already have some fantastic recordings; amongst them, the most notable being the composer himself with Dinu Lipatti on piano (still available from Electrecord label), and Mihaela Martin with Roland Pontinen from BIS records. The present recording only adds to that wonderful mix.

For years I used to consider M. Martin and R. Pontinen rendition of Impressions D'enfance the benchmark by which all other performances are judged. Nevertheless, the current version has its many merits: charming, convincing, and above all, intelligent, demonstrating full understanding of Enescu's compositional and interpretative intentions. The "Torso" Sonata, which if I am not mistaken is a world premiere recording, showcases once more the boundless musical capabilities of the two wonderful performers here. After contacting Hanssler Classic label I learned with much enthusiasm that the second volume of Enescu's complete Violin and Piano works will be released in Germany and rest of Europe in August 2008 and soon after it should be available here in the States, too. Honestly, I can't wait for it!!
