CD ReviewsIt Does What it was meant to do very well Fred McGhee | Austin, TX | 01/03/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "This all-instrumental concept album (the first for Duke in a number of years) is an ode to an "evening" of you know what with that special someone. How does it work? Extremely well. The music conveys the moods perfectly and Duke once again demonstrates his uncanny ability to COMMUNICATE with his music, almost to the point of speaking. This is what makes him popular, but also makes him so maddeningly irritating to purist jazz critics. Duke has never been afraid of being liked, and of being "pop" in the sense of providing AVERAGE listeners (not highbrow intellectuals) genuine pleasure and delight. And in that sense, this music really delivers. (This is not to say that George's music is bereft of intellectual substance; this album is played at a very high musical level). If you're alone, let your imagination run wild about that magical evening you could be having. And if you are already in love, let this music be the perfect end to end soundtrack for that relationship-saving evening you've been craving.Doctor George Duke: has written the perfect love Rx with "After Hours"" It feels GOOD Jerry Swartout | Hamilton, MT United States | 11/24/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "On this one,the Duke of George is really hot. But it puts way more involving music in it than anything he has ever done on a CD before, or since. It is totally romantic, but with an undercurrent of intelligent energy that will tend to prolong any good times you and yours are having, because it will carry you along with a wonderful groove that isn't simply funky, or souful, but uniquely musically involving, like nothing you have ever heard. Can he play? OH......YES." From Duke 'Til Dawn Andre' S Grindle | Bangor,ME. | 12/13/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) ""After Hours" is a highly seductive instrumental album
showcasing Duke's fantastic way with the keys and it's a wonderful ride from the opening funk number "Rush Hour/Road Rage" and the equally grooving "It's On"."Together As One" and "Sweet Dreams" are two mellow, cool acoustic jazz numbers and the rest from "The Touch,"From Dusk 'Til Dawn" are sensual mood grooved of the highest order! It's a concept album about a romantic evening between two lovers and considering it's general flow of sound this is PERFECT for the occasion!George Duke's finest 90's album!" |
