The King of the Tailgate
Dr. Robert Hackler | Orlando, Fl. USA | 11/07/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)
"In this CD, mislabeled--actually the Gene Mayl band according to Brunis' own lyrics, one has the best example of the phrasing of Dixieland's best ensemble trombonist (Brunis' own credits), with the microphone right in front of his horn. Mayl, who plays tuba and bass, and Dick Baars on cornet do outstanding work, but this, by far, is the best recording of Brunis' tailgate work, featuring classics from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band repetoire and some of the New Orleans Rhythm King's numbers, including Georg's "Tin Roof Blues". Recorded in l967, about ten years after I heard him in Chicago, this is a must for the enthusiast who wants to hear every gliss and trombone phrase that makes authentic jazz."
