Synopsis

Album Description
Bartley was born in New York City, into a musical family, and grew up on Maryland's eastern shore, switching from clarinet to guitar along the way. His family's taste in music ran from classical to show tunes but Geoff soon discovered traditional music and began to inhale it in all its forms; from folk to jazz to roots blues; from Robert Johnson to Bob Dylan and all points in between. Arrangements range from solo guitar to full band. The band: Ben Wittman, drums; Mike Rivard, basses; Matt Jenson, Hammond B-3; Seth Connelly; piano, lap steel, dobro, mandolin, and electric guitars; Ricardo Monzon, percussion; Geoff, guitars, vocals, ocarina. Backing vocals by Lisa and Selena Wilson, Jonatha Brooke, Catie Curtis, John Gorka, Jennifer Kimball, Les Sampou, and John Lincoln Wright.

CD Reviews

Geoff has hit a home run
07/30/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Geoff once again shows that he is one of the most talented and thoughtful songwriters around today. Put that together with terrific musicianship and a bunch of good folks helping out and you have a top shelf album. Several classics on this album, especially the title track.By the way, I have already heard "Hear that Wind Howl"--what's the hold up Amazon? I recommend it to all."
Masterful guitar work, beautiful vocals, heartfelt lyrics.

"These lyrics convey the same emotional depth and clarity as his earlier work, but who'd have thought Geoff's brilliant guitar work and singing could have become even more compelling? This CD features appearances by Lisa and Selena Wilson, Jonathan Brooke, Catie Curtis, John Gorka, Jennifer Kimball, Les Sampou, and John Lincoln Wright. If you liked his earlier work you'll love One Kind Word. If you haven't heard Geoff Bartley, get this CD. It's the kind of musical discovery you make only two or three times in a lifetime. Like Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon, Geoff Bartley seems incapable of resting on past accomplishments. His earlier CD's, Blues Beneath the Surface, Interstates, and Hear That Wind Howl, contain some of the best guitar work I've heard; I'd have been happy if this new CD, One Kind Word, had even half the heart of his earlier work. As it turns out it's a new high-water mark. Even the technical quality of the recording is outstanding."
This is a beautiful, intense album--Bartely at his best.

"I first saw Geoff Bartley 16 years ago in the Nameless Coffeehouse in Cambridge, Mass, rendering a stunning version of Joni Mitchell's Urge For Going, and I've been hooked ever since. His sophisticated guitar playing never over-powers intense, creative lyrics, and a deep, passionate voice. This newest CD has as much power as anything Geoff has done previously, and it's looking at some serious play time on my stereo."
