Once Was Lost - Available For A Minute - Then Gone Again!
Michael S. Smith | Dansville, NY United States | 07/28/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Wow! It took quite a bit of perserverance to find this little gem from 1972. But it's unavailable nonetheless - certainly worth searching for in auction venues - why some great cd's are lost to us - even as an import, perplexes me to no end! Anyway, this album features some of the creamiest musicians (Amos Garrett and Ben Keith, to name just a couple) and featuring the inimitable vocals of Geoff and Maria - this CD would be a treasure, if it were available. (By the way - the correct title for this CD is "Sweet Potatoes")"
Classic American music

"Somewhere there are thousands of A&R men, hundreds of SVPS & tens of CEOs wondering why their jobs are dripping down the chute. This is part of why. The consummate talent and taste of Geoff & Maria & a crew of classy sidemen ... out of print. But there's tons of yesterday's stale & useless dreck on any streetcorner.

This is just superlative, considered music sung & played with passion and musicality that's rare in any age. They have listened & assimilated & then brought their own skill and talent to American music & play these tunes with affection and deep respect--but not without a sense of humor. It's alive, this stuff, unlike so much of what's available. You can see both Geoff & Maria separately these days, in small venues, & it's well worth your time to do so--or pick up recent albums, like Geoff's Secret Handshake , which is perhaps even better than this. I speak of my still vital vinyl edition, purchased back when the industry still knew something of music. This is great stuff ... snap it up if they ever make a mistake and re-release this one."
