CD ReviewsJuicy cuts highlight a well-rounded effort Richard Diaz | 07/25/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "Fresh from the fertile Canadian house mines is Gavin Froome's first full length album, Mobile Villager. He's no stranger to the scene, though, putting out a variety of vinyl singles through the Nordic Trax label, many compiled here. Now a complete set of original house tunes is both a rarity and a challenge; tied to the chugging 4/4, how will Froome manage to make a dozen songs stand out? Adding deep groove, filter tweaks, and even xylophone to make the shimmering "Malibu" is a good start. Or witness the power of the squiggle, teased in and out on the snappy "Fly Be to Brasil." Of course, we want some shakin' numbers, and he complies with the (musical) organ-tasty "Ice Breaker" and the distorted, is-my-CD-skipping closer "Disco Specialty." Even tunes not destined for dance floors or swanky bars showcase variety and intricacy ("Knee Deep" "It Is Time," or inventiveness ("Blue Collar.)" His juiciest cuts are sure to pop up on compilations, but as a whole this is a well-rounded collection. B+"
