CD Reviews

Gary Puckett - Europa
Roy Webber | Salt Lake City, Utah USA | 03/09/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Gary Puckett's Europa is an excellant CD for new and old fans alike. Old Puckett fans may find it different when they first hear it, but if played 2 or 3 times it grows on you - a lot. It has become one of my favorite Puckett albums. The Europa CD has a catchy and lively salsa beat and the music and vocals are very well done. The balance between voice and music seems to be right on to me. As always, Gary Puckett's voice is clear, concise and powerful, with a smokey velvet quality that is unmatched by any other singer. From a talent standpoint, Puckett is one of the most talented singers that has ever been heard on this planet and the Europa CD allows a new and exciting forum for that talent to shine brightly. Any true fan of great singing talent would be wise to give this CD a listen or two. I enjop all the tracks on this CD - there are no tracks that I resent when I play the CD and I play it often."

"A very different sound from the "classic" Gary Puckett. This CD has a mediterranean sound to it but still has the wonderful emotional Pucket voice and great lyrics."
This CD is probably Gary Puckett's best work yet!!

"Gary Puckett hasn't gotten older...he's gotten BETTER!!! That magnificent voice of his is richer than ever & he really pushes the envelope in terms of his vocal range...in many of the songs, he hits notes one would expect from a tenor rather than a baritone. In fact, the entire album appears to have been recorded using a higher key than one would normally expect from Gary Puckett, yet he can use his higher register flawlessly. The album as a whole has a salsa/Mediterranean beat to it, & it's definitely a departure from the Gary Puckett his fans have come to expect. As a dyed-in-the-wool Gary Puckett fan, I believe this is his best work yet! With the exception of "Young Girl" & "Lady Willpower," either Gary or his brother, David, wrote the songs on this album. They're all truly great songs with equally great lyrics. I LOVE the arrangements for "Young Girl" & "Lady Willpower" on this album...THEY ROCK!!!It's indeed unfortunate that he had to go to Europe to record this...the record companies stateside really blew it. With decent promotion from a domestic record company, I am convinced this album could have been a Grammy winner! For honest-to-goodess Puckett fans, this is a must-have to add to your collection. For anyone else who happens to enjoy magnificent singing, I can't recommend this album highly enough. Gary Puckett is a "singer's singer" in every sense of the word, & as a singer myself, I tend to be more critical of other singers. It's wonderful to be able to listen to a singer of the caliber of Gary Puckett and know that I will enjoy what I'm hearing because it's done to perfection. He's definitely underrated, & under the right circumstances, he could have enjoyed the same degree of success as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Neil Diamond, or perhaps Elton John. He's still performing around the country & his show is a real treat! He's also one of the nicest, most down-to-earth gentlemen I've ever met. He loves his fans & hasn't forgotten that, without them, he wouldn't still be doing what he loves to do...performing. I'd give this album 10 stars if it were possible. Enjoy!!"
