Giuseppe Sinopoli began his Mahler cycle with a terrific performance of the Fifth (now out of print), and then made a mess of just about every subsequent recording. Most of them were immediately deleted from the catalog, and some weren't released in this country at all. This Third is far from the worst of them, but it's also not good enough to warrant your attention when you could have a great performance by Leonard Bernstein, Eliahu Inbal, or Esa-Pekka Salonen. --David Hurwitz
