CD Reviews

Eclectic Jazz/Funk
10/11/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Just look at the cover of this CD. Does Michael Ray look like he is having a good time? I think so. Looking very much like Sun Ra who Ray happened to play with for many years, he certainly is as colorful a performer as his bright garb would indicate. Ray's 25 year track record is very impressive. Some of the people he had the pleasure of jamming with were Patti LaBelle, The Delfonics, The Stylistics and a 10 year stint with Kool and the Gang. Sun Ra designated him as the "Intergalactic Research Tone Scientist". The master of space/funk/jazz knew what he was doing by employing Michael. Ray and his cosmic krewe most recently received the Gambit Weekly's Big Easy Entertainment Award for Best Funk Band of 1999. Bountiful experience and many years on the road has brought this talented artist to a point in his career were a recording like this is bound to raise some eyebrows and catapult him into star status. All the success and respect that follows will just sweeten the pie. This man has built a solid reputation already. This stage of his career puts him in the limelight, and rightfully so. "Funk If I Know" explores the many moods and facets of Ray's music. On one track you are getting all funky then the next you are grooving on some hip hop, the next track offers up some big band or contemporary jazz. A real round trip around the Jazz galaxy and all it's sub-genres. To say the least this is a very eclectic smorgasbord of jazz and funk with many different elemental sprinkles to give it some added flavor and taste. This CD doesn't fall short in any areas. Hop aboard the spaceship Ray and let his cosmic krewe take you to a musical universe that you have never visited, you won't want to come home... Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck/October 10, 1999"

"A dazzling array of top Jazz and Rock names, including Bob Gulotti, Stacey Starkweather, Tim Green, Clarence Johnson III and Adam Klipple as well as special guests John Medeski and Trey Anastasio (phish) contribute to former Sun Ra and Kool and the Gang trumpeteer's follow-up album. A great blend of straight funk (almost P-funk like on the first track "cosmic city") to top notch latin jazz to cutting edge space jazz. It has something for everyone and everything for most."
