Funeral mist - devilry

"Devilry starts out with some screaming and samples before launching into what sounds like, at first listen, a totally chaotic mess of noise. Repeated listenings prove that there is some good songwriting and song structures buried in there, but do not take away from the feeling of chaos. The amount of distortion, layers of weird noise and samples add to the listening experience. There is a good amount of variation here and the effects add to the mood. The vocals are often layered or have a bit of effects on them, but the effects aren't really overdone or misused, in fact I think they're used quite well and sound great.

The rereleased CD includes older demo versions of some of the same songs in predictably worse quality. Listening to the two versions of "Nightside Phantom" back to back made me realize that the production quality really does sound good (on the non-demo version), as you can barely make out what the guitars or anything else are doing on the demo version, which is slightly longer due to a sample at the beginning. While somewhat unclear production doesn't usually bother me, it's sort of jarring when the first half the CD is crystal-clear and the second half is older demos in which you can't quite make out any of the lyrics and you can't really tell what the guitars are doing. It's interesting material, it's just hard to listen to immediately after hearing the other songs.

The lyrical matter suits the songs perfectly, and can be inferred from song titles like "Bringer of Terror" and "Nightside Phantom." "Funeral Mist" is still my favorite song on here though, despite my dislike for instances of bands and songs having the same name. It is damnably catchy, and on the more melodic and epic-sounding side compared to the other songs. "Nightside Phantom" is another highlight, but the whole CD sounds good and I prefer it to the full length Salvation."

"I bought Maranatha before this release, the third (?) of Funeral Mist's output.Maranatha is far superior. Devilry is not quite the signature that the latest album is, and not as good as Triumphator's Wings of Antichrist but if you haven't heard Funeral Mist this is excellent to start with. The production for a debut cd is pretty good and you get the previous demo Havoc with it.Devilry is better than alot of black metal because Arioch is one of the more original black metal vokillists. The music is fully realized and is fairly symphonic. His vocal style reminds me of Atilla of Mayhem, etc.Great Black Metal Blaspheming!"
