Ambient waves
Daniel Leithauser | Grand Junction, CO USA | 08/02/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Hard to beat the descriptive language in the published Igloo review above, but this recording continues to catch my brain's ambient pathway. It is slow, electronic, swirling, somewhat dark, and the droning changes slowly but just enough to keep it interesting. Although this has been been out at least 3 years, it only recently became available in various distribution channels in the US. It was listed by US distributor EarRational and their description, along with the above, attracted me to it.

Electronic music has evolved over the years from German psychedelica, mechanistics, and improv, to slower ambient electronic to trance to a made up category of electronica. Seemingly the "a" at the end of electronic means ambient. If electronica really means ambient electronic, then Frozen Rabbit falls solidly into that category. Unfortunately, electronica seems to just cover anything that is electronic these days -- from ambient, environmental, psychedelica to mechanistic machine beats, to drum and bass, to more danceable electronic stuff. Frozen Rabbit is ambient electronic drone, undulating with its own underlying wave, but without much excitement or dancing--unless you are in a wonderfully dark space. It could be environmental background music. Music for an installation. Maybe even in the futuristic world I would like to live in -- high speed glass elevator music. Headphones might be called for. Playing it soft would work, but increasing the volume would immerse and embrace you in powerful vibrations.

RIYL, Recommended If You Like: I would drop it into a recording label category of "Silent Records". Kim Cascone's Silent Records produces all sorts of slower electronic ambiance in addition to some trance ambient chill. "Groups" like Arcane Device, PGR, Closedown, Heavenly Music Corporation, and lots of compilations -- notably the From Here to Tranquility volumes. The Chemical Bride, Trout, From Here to Tranquility, Vol. 1: Ambient Compilation, In a Garden of Eden. I only mention these recordings --because of course, you should purchase Frozen Rabbit(!)-- since if you are familiar with them, you would definitely like Frozen Rabbit. If you are not familiar, now you have a list of stuff to add to your Frozen Rabbit meal.

Although there are no samples here, a quick search in myspace will help you find Frozen Rabbit's profile."
