The old master shows the rest of us how it ought to be done. In his nineties, Mieczyslaw Horszowski played Bach with purpose and clarity, never letting his beautiful tone blur the contours of the music. His Schumann is exquisitely characterized, with every little miniature having a life of its own, and again the luminous tone contributes much to the overall effect. Three pieces of Chopin are real object lessons in playing that master idiomatically, the rhythms are flexible but still clear and the music seems almost to be sung instead of played. The disc may not last very long, but playing like this is priceless. --Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

The finest solo piano recording ever.
05/04/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Obviously, I must clarify the title of my review; this is the finest solo piano recording ever heard by me (I have a substantial collection, however, including discs featuring such greats as Rubinstein, Horowitz, Kempff, Cliburn, Rachmaninoff, Schnabel, Cortot, Brendel, Zimerman, etc.). Like most great pianists, he improved with age. Horszowski was 98 when he recorded this disc (commonly referred to as his '100th Birthday Recording,' because it was released at about that time), bringing 95 years of experience to the performance. Playing the piano was as natural to him as breathing is to most of us, and it shows in his playing. Horszowski played with extraordinary gentleness, while possessing a remarkable technique. He was never flashy, always using his great skill to play beautifully, rather than to draw attention to his ability (He is reported to have said to one of his students who did otherwise, "Please remember, this is a sonata for piano, not pianist.").If you purchase this disc and are not immediately drawn to it, please play it repeatedly before passing judgment on it. The subtleties of his greatness may go unnoticed on the first playing."
