Freeworm - A Genius and a Cool Guy
Chapman | 06/14/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Vincent is his name and he is the mastermind behind "Freeworm". I was recently in Lisbon working for an electronic music festival which he came to with his live act consisting of a VJ, an MC, a bassist/accordian/keyboard player, and of course Vincent himself. They were unbelieveably cool and gave a helluva show. Now, for the disc itself it is a MUST for anyone interested in a fusion of hip-hop, drum and bass, ambient and acoustic music. That is only the beginning though because it is impossible to classify his stuff which is why it's so fabulous: it's TRULY original. Vegetation=Fuel is his only album for now but he is due for another release later this year (heard straight from the source). One more thing: if you are in Quebec you may be lucky enough to catch him live somewhere, he usually plays in Quebec City but he's based in Montreal."

"never, would i ever, under any circumstances, write a review for anyone i didn't like... in fact, i've always wondered how reviews cannot be polarized into two types, either amazing or buryingly bad... but this is not a case of personal bias: this albumn is by far the best anyone could ask for... the synopsis is quite hard, fusion perhaps, to fill the wake of the weak minimalist movement prevalent and cresting the genres of both hip-hop and drum and bass. freeworm: bass and beats construct a listening space within which you can easily lose yourself, as they are well engineered and could stand alone, but through some miraculous feat, layer and layer of sound are then seamlessly interwoven -accordian, human beat-box, bongos, cello, acoustic guitar, and the soaring, middle-eastern influenced vocality of i-don't-know-her-name, but i'd surely bear her children- producing not sound, but emotion, not rhythm, but sheer energy... i am not a drug addict, just in case you are wondering, but i've never experienced anything like this... the Montreal french-underground prevails, collaborating to produce an albumn of immense talent, resetting musical boundaries, and restoring your faith in the contemporary music industry. o unprecedented, o unsurpassed, o unparalleled freeworm... you've left me breathless and enlightened... favourite tracks: 3,5,6,8,10 & 11... but i would've bought the albumn had these tracks been neglected!!!"
In my top ten list for the past few years

"I love this album. Great mix of natural and technological sounds. Great rhythms. And rhythm is what makes it or not for me. I always have trouble classifying music. This album makes it harder than ever. The words that come to mind are drum and bass, world, trip-hop. A must if you like innovation, and sensibility..."
