Synopsis

Amazon.com
These works are included in the numbered series of Haydn's piano sonatas, but Lola Odiaga uses their original titles of Partitas and Divertimenti. They show Haydn at an early stage of his development, which usually means that they are of interest only to specialists and scholars. As much great music as Haydn wrote, he did not mature early. While these pieces certainly have their charming moments, none of them is first-rate Haydn, and they don't make very compelling listening. Odiaga plays them all well, but this CD can wait until you're stocked up on Haydn's later, better keyboard music. --Leslie Gerber

Musical perfection...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"A good call of mr.L.Gerber's "intro-comment" to this selection of pieces, but I still highly admire all of Ms.Odiaga's playing: it is fresh, imaginative and most of all perfectly in style. Also, I have her virtuoso intrepretation of "Esterhazy" sonatas which is adorable, and one of a kind of course. Nevertheless, there is also H.L.Hirsch, who is playing the same repertoire but with a diferent delicacy. While Ms.Odiaga elaborates form and style,Mr.Hirsch emphasizes expession of embelishements little figures (for this I didn't ask my sister, musician for help in review). Most likely,that..with these two artists,we have the best Haydn keyboard music ever, which in all aspects outshines what used to be standard( i.e. Horowitz...).
