Synopsis

Album Description
"A twangy, ringing electric guitar style that was irresistible on fast numbers and stung hard on the downbeat stuff." -- ALL MUSIC GUIDE Frankie Lee Sims was one of the great down-home Texas blues men of the fifties. This previously un-issued session recorded in New York for the Enjoy label in 1960 features remakes of his biggest hits, "Lucy Mae Blues" and "Walking With Frankie." Produced by the legendary Bobby Robinson. Sims began his recording career with Blue Bonnet Records in 1948, and went on to record for Specialty and Ace in the fifties. His big Southern hits included "Lucy Mae Blues," "She Likes to Boogie Real Low," and "Walking With Frankie." Unable to follow up with hits in the sixties, he struggled with alcoholism, legal troubles, and ill health, finally succumbing to pneumonia in 1970.

Walking With Frankie

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Approximately 42 min. long. Sound is remastered but is just right for this style of music. Frankie Lee Sims is not a well known post-war bluesman. His cousin is Lightin' Hopkins. In the forties Sims began playing electric guitar like many of his contemporaries. Sims started his own recording career in the fifties for Specialty Records. These tunes have been collected by Specialty on a cd titled Lucy Mae Blues (a hit tune for Sims) along with unreleased material from this same time. The sound on these recordings is just what it should be-immediate-in your face-first takes. Sims vocal phrasing and sound is similar to his cousin. The instrumentation is Sims on electric guitar with bass and drums. Of course his voice is a fourth instrument which gives these recordings their feel and power. Sims re-recorded several of his songs from the Specialty sessions and they are the equal of the originals. This is a good bridge between country blues and city blues, when electric instruments and backing of bass and drums with a little piano in the background was becoming the norm. If you like small-group electric blues with a lived-in voice out front buy this and pick up Sims Specialty cd at the same time."
