CD Reviews

NOT for Zappa fans
Hanz Franz | YORBA LINDA, CA United States | 11/18/2005
(1 out of 5 stars)

"It says it all in the subtext. Music by Bla Bla Bla Bla - NO music by Frank Zappa. NO music even remotely resembling his. It sounds like a bad imitation of what his music might sound like to someone who has only heard Gregorry Pekkary. It is too full of silly sound effects and bad orchestration. To an outside, it would seem that Frank Zappa must have composed only cartoon music. And the vocalist is horrible! Don't quit your day job dude! And don't YOU buy this excuse of a tribute album~!!!"
Belgium meets Frank: a perfect combination!
Jean Berevoescu | Pleasant Hill, CA USA | 07/07/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Belgian scene is an amazing one in itself - the most prolific, original and forward looking schools in new music today, with fantastic excursions through RIO, Avant-Prog, new Chamber and jazz (proving, in my view, that of all the many things Frank said, at least one of them was less accurate than his usual perfect record: "No Frank, Jazz does not smell funny - it's actually doing great in Belgium!" :-)

And what a great idea to have a group of Belgian musicians compose original pieces for a Zappa Tribute. Yes - one of the pieces ("A Modest Proposal (Anno 1995)") shows a clear tendency to build something similar to "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary" - but this is not all there is in this great CD.

And even if it was all a Greggery Peccary clone - what's wrong with that? "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary" is one of the biggest and most unique jewels in Frank's amazing Universe - any attempts to emulate it, to build something even remotely similar to it should be praised by any music lover, especially by great Zappa fans (as I definitely am one, if it was not clear by now :-) :-)
