CD Reviews

Tremendous war document
L. Ackerman | Ashburn, VA (USA) | 05/09/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a wonderful document of the artistry of many under the duress of apalling events. I can only imagine that, given the nature of these works, these artists were actually inspired by their circumnstances during ocuppied Paris. 'Le Danse des Morts (Dance of the Dead) composed in 1938, combines recitation & singing.

Honegger's Symphony No 2 is possibly his masterpiece; composed in 1940 these sessions took place during a time-span of two years (1942-1944); this possibly its premiere recording. The piece is incredibly moving, expressing the coldness of the soul and anxiety of living in war torn France, and yet, ending triumphantly, in the major, with a trumpet chorale over the strings.

Jolivet's rare work are three laments recorded between 1943-1944 (with Pierre Bernac the baritone here) closing a wonderful concept album all conducted by the unforgettable Charles Munch.

Cascavelle production values are outstanding overall."
