One of the most striking French singers of the 1960s, Francoise Hardy is considered part of the bubblegummy ye-ye scene, though her moody, elegant records are not as bouncy or perky as the more prefab female singers, such as France Gall or Brigitte Bardot. Clair-Obscur is a classy, reserved album, a sleek middle ground between the chanson balladry of her youth, 90s trip-hop, and good old-fashioned Tin Pan Alley standards. Guest singers include Jacques Dutronc (her husband), Etienne Daho and Iggy Pop (in a particularly beguiling English-language rendition of 'I'll Be Seeing You'). Tant De Belles Choses (So Many Beautiful Things) is more melancholy but features collaborations with her son & heir apparent Thomas Dutronc. EMI.
