CD Reviews

White man play heap good music
John W. Kasdorf II | Kalamazoo, MI | 12/09/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The boys really count coup on this one! You can just about see Freddy's golden locks flopping all over the place, as he Jekyll & Hydes it through the lyrics. Mr. Maltese is no slouch, either. I believe the phrase is "dy-no-MITE." We get so many requests for "No Dice" and "Kent Berglund (Action Man)"--mostly from the females--I've nearly worn out the laser on the station's CD player. Of course, the Pallbearers' musicianship is clocks and socks above most. These boys don't just play with their instruments...they downright molest them! Listening to Dusty's hammering and JC's bassification is like watching a car chase, and Nat spoils us with his guitar squawks. That's candy I don't mind taking from strangers! The recording plucks the energy of an F&M&TPP live show off the stage and crams it into a tidy little flat thing, offering a blood-boiling two-dimensional version of a five-dimensional experience (the fifth dimension is pleasure!) Anyway, get it."
Why this CD is one of my favorites
Ryan King | Lansing, Michigan | 01/14/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The reason this CD is one of my favorites is that I really admire what these 5 guys are doing with music. I honestly believe they are channeling a rock and roll spirit. You know when you're driving late at night, and you hear that song on the "oldies" station, and this song grabs you because it's oozing rebellion and lust? You know that frustrated teen-stomp sound that takes the those "primitive" 60s production standards and STILL turns your mind inside-out with animal delight? Well, this album is FULL of that sound and that spirit. And these guys should be honored as heroes for keeping that spirit alive. (Their live show is sort of...terrifying, in that teenage werewolf sort of way.) F & M and the Pallbearers couldn't pull off this kind of ambitious project without great playing, an encyclopedic knowledge of those 60s greats (including those famous production values), a laugh out loud sense of humor, lots of cojones, and a whole lot of creativity. I think their being from Kalamazoo, Michigan has something to do with it also. That's a town where you really don't want to taste the water."
This album will save rock and roll!
J. Brown | Chicago, IL United States | 12/10/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"F&M prove that they are the greatest rock and roll band in the history of recorded music. Their garage rock sound brings you back to the days of Paul Revere & the Raiders, ? & the Mysterians, and all those other kids whose moms dropped them off at a local recording studio and went and played bridge while their boys kicked out some of the most manic, frantic, and gigantic sounds every cut into vinyl. If you don't own this album, you don't know what you're missing. If you don't own this album, you can't even claim you like music. If you don't own this album, you're not a decent American."
