CD Reviews

These other guys don't know what they are talking about

"Well, after reading these other reviews, all I can say is the world in 2001 is a place of many varied tastes, as always. I think that 5ive style is very good, well made musician's music that is fun and funky, and cerebral, too, with little bits of production enhancements cleverly lurking behind very easily likeable jam tunes. The rhthym is very funky, but only complimentary to the standout instrument, the guitar. The guitar style is almost bluesy, it is not impossible to imitate, it just holds the song and moves it in a very jangly, funky direction. That's I guess the best way I can describe it. I think they are a great band, at least on the debut, but it depends on what you're in to. If you like R&B like "five" or the pop princesses and princes that are popular nowadays, you definitely won't like this."
Amazing band, amazing album.

"5IVE STYLE is an excellent Chicago-based instrumental indie band on the funk-disco tip. Members of 5IVE STYLE also play in other great indie bands THE SEA & CAKE and TORTOISE. This particular SubPop release is the only 5IVE STYLE album which is easy to find, and I highly recommend owning it, as well as any of the earlier pre-SubPop releases you might be fortunate enough to find. A superb live band, as well."
Who needs a singer, anyway?

"Unbelieveably cool, 4 piece, instrumental funk/indie rock band that brings the 70s genre into the 90s college arena. 5ive Style features nasty guitar riffs backed up by one of the funkiest rhythm sections since The Meters. The disc has a great raw, live sound that doesn't reek of the overproduction that plagues many other modern "funk" artists (whoops, did I say Prince?). This album has yet to collect a speck of dust in the two years I've owned it (remarkable since the CD is barely over 30 minutes long). If you like instrumental funk, or funk music in general, this album will keep your head bobbing for a long time."
