Synopsis

The Figgs have always seemed like a band born at the wrong time. They've got the punky-pop (or is the poppy-punk?) thing down cold, and they cop their licks from some great bands--the Kinks, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker (with whom they've toured as backup band), even Kiss. Banda Macho finds them at their best, with guitarist Mike Genty and bassist Pete Donnelly churning out songs that make the kids bounce and the adults turn up the car stereo. The surprising thing about this album is the emergence of guitarist Guy Lyons as an additional songwriter, with one of the album's best songs, "Bad Luck Sammy," to his credit. --Randy Silver

CD Reviews

Terrific
06/12/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you had to define rock and roll, the ur-text of rock, this album would be it. Short, fast and catchy songs with wry lyrics epitomizing the underdogs that classic rock and rollers have always been. It's the type of album that is so immediately winning that you figure you'll get sick of it soon. You don't."
Lots of snap, crackle, and POWER POP

"Three chords, the occasional relative minor, sugary backing vocals, crunchy pentatonic solos, and a phenomenonally tight rhythm section ... who needs anything else? The only thing better is seeing them live. Highly recommended to any fan of power pop."
