If it's traditional carols you want--delivered in the grandest tradition of English cathedral performance--this disc will suit you very well. The superb voices of three choirs--Westminster Cathedral, the Cantorium Choir, and the Alexandra Choir--combine with organ, timpani, the Fanfare Trumpeters of the Royal Military School of Music, and the magnificent acoustics of Westminster to create a powerful effect in the performance of 16 carols such as "O come all ye faithful," "Silent Night," "The first nowell," "Once in Royal David's City," and "Sussex Carol." Several of the excellent arrangements are by Westminster director David Hill and organist James O'Donnell. The program concludes with Westminster Cathedral's traditional carol service recessional voluntary--the spectacular "Carillon de Westminster," written by French organist Louis Vierne. --David Vernier
