Great 60's psychedelic pop!!!
11/25/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I stumbled across this group by accident. I was watching a Debbie Harry movie "Six ways to Sunday" and over the closing credits was an incredible song that I assumed must have been some great late 60s girl group hit that I had never heard. Reading the credits I saw the song was "Love love love" by the Feminine Complex. Searching the internet, I came to find that they were an unsuccessful group who's album, fortunately, was reissued on cd. The music is incredible and very impressive considering that Mindy Dalton, as a 17 year old, could write better music with more intelligent lyrics than a lot of today's artists. The production is first rate with some great bluesy psychedelic rock tracks (which a friend of mine compares to the San Francisco band "Cold Blood" also from about the same era.) The ballads are first rate as well and display the quality of Mindy's voice beautifully. Jean William's one writing composition on the album "Forgetting" is an excellant piece of 60's pop. We can only hope the continued exposure of this music gives the girls the credit they deserve after all these years. The cd is filled out with demo tracks which display a much leaner garage band sound with guitar arrangements, some of which, strangely, remind me of the Smiths. There is a companion cd to this (which is out of print) which collects the rest of the groups known recordings, mainly live takes and early cover versions. If you like this one, the other disc is worth locating."
Beyond the valley of the dolls has nothing on this

"Remember the Carrie Nations in Beyond The Valley of the Dolls. They were a fictional rock band made up of girls, and made some great pop rock for the soundtrack.

But Feminie complex were the real deal. This album is made up of well written, confident songs, and great playing. These girls were barely teenagers, but they made brillant, middle of the road pop/rock that could hold its own with Nancy Sinatra or Dusty Springfield. It is the type of music you would hear on a movie soundtrack or on a cartoon of the era, and wonder if this type of band ever really exsisted.

Well, fortunately, they sure did. Picture four little girls hijacking your prom in 1967, taking over the stage, and finding out they are REALLY good.

Fresh, and lots of fun. I think most people who enjoy good music of any genre will like this CD."
Surprisingly AWESOME

"I heard a few clips on a website, and decided on a whim to check it out some more & order the CD to have a few new tunes for my SuperOldies station. You know the type...those rare CDs you come across every few years that blow you away? THIS is IT! Fans of Pickettywitch, Swing Out Sister, etc. will enjoy this.

The demos are hauntingly beautiful. The originals are amazingly chordy and deep lyrics - try to remember these girls were in their late teens! The lead vocals are deep, rich and unique. This was a voice that deserved dozens of more releases...a great one that got away. She can belt it out, yet on the mellow tunes has a voice you could listen to for hours, sounding much more mature than a gal of 16-18 yrs old.

I expected some raw garage fluff, 3 chord "Josie & The Pussycats" style stuff...what a surprise. It is a mix of Dionne Warwick meets Shocking Blue. A good band to begin with, then soundin ghuge with some backing session musicians. The uptempo songs are fun rockers, slow tracks are easy listening pop with some real neat psych twists. This was a super pleasant surprise, and gets my top notch recommendation. Great sound quality. Would have liked to have seen more in depth packaging."
